Return the Bike
Trebor briefly contemplates abandoning the bike but his moral compass won’t let him. He’d learned in youth group that this feeling is called conviction and it’s when the Holy Spirit alerts you of living wrong. So Trebor ultimately decides to go return the bike.
As he walks back and rethinks the plan in his mind. I’ll turn on the corner before the home, cut through the alley, and sneak into the backyard. I’ll place the bike down and take off. Then I’ll sleep easy tonight.
The plan is a good one and soon he finds himself in the kid’s backyard. He places the bike down and begins to debate taking the bus home or walking home.
“You!”
Trebor looks up and the mother comes out the back door with a knife in her hand. “What else are you trying to steal?” she says frantically. “I’m calling the cops right now.”
Trebor is temporarily frozen with fear. He thinks of two options. First, he can own up to his mistake and explain the desperate circumstances that led to his foolish decision. But there is no guarantee that she will either believe him or not call the cops. Or, he can run before the incident develops any further.
What should he do?
