Ask Her for the Time to Spark Conversation

Trebor makes the bold decision to talk to her but finds it too creepy to just introduce himself. Rather, he decides to go with another tactic.

To Trebor’s delight, she isn’t talking to her friends. She’s just staring out the window. First, Trebor knows that he needs to control his breathing. He tries to speak under his breath to calibrate his voice so it doesn’t crack when he talks to her.

He inches over to her and clears his throat. She doesn’t look over. He nods and looks out the window, hoping to look natural. He clears his throat a second time but this time to speak.

“Excuse,” he squeaks. He barely gets the word out but it does the trick.

She looks over at him.

“Would you by any chance have the time?”

She clicks the AirPods that are hidden by her long brown hair and says, “What?” By her expression, Trebor believes that he just interrupted her favorite song.

Don’t let that rattle you, he says to himself. “I said, do you by chance have the time? I forgot to wear my Apple watch.” Actually, I don’t own one yet but if I did, I’d probably forget to wear it.

A random student from school, sitting with earshot says, “It’s 3:20pm.”

Wow, that backfired. Okay, try to recover.

“Doesn’t your phone have the time?” she says.

“My phone?” Now he sounds dumb. Before he can recover, she presses a button on her AirPods and exits the bus with her friends.

He looks out the window stares at her walking away and wonders if he will see her again.

His heart starts racing and he’s feeling regret come over him. This is it. One last decision.

Should he demand that the bus be pulled over and chase her or should he just accept that it was not meant to be?
