Explain That You’re a Christian

Maybe you didn’t realize this before but Trebor is a young man of God. What does that mean? Well if you ask him, he’ll say, “I’ve trusted in Jesus to save me from my sins.” Any youth leader would take such statements with a grain of salt. After all, youth will tend to say the right thing at church. But what will they say around their peers? Is there a more perfect test than this?

Now, you understand that the advice you just gave Trebor could lead to some disastrous scenarios - all of which Trebor is fully aware of. He’s learned a lot about martyrs of the faith at youth group. Sometimes people are harmed BECAUSE they stand up for their faith.

Even worse than death is humiliation. What if his bold declaration results in uncontrollable laughter? By tomorrow, half the school will know him as a church boy and pretend to sing worship songs as he walks past.

The echoes of the aggressive accusation “You callin’ me a liar?” is drowned out by the traffic on Diversey Avenue. Trebor builds up the courage to boldly proclaim the Name that is above every Name. At this Name, EVERY knee shall bow and EVERY tongue confess, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. He prays that God will fill him with the boldness of Jonathan Edwards and the power of Saint Peter.

Trebor swallows and says, “Nah man, I’m a Christian.”

I know what you’re thinking: “That’s it?” Well, here’s the moment of truth.

Huge dude #1’s head jerks back and examines Trebor. He nods slowly and softly says, “Ok, cool bruh.”

Trebor nods to the huge dudes, and walks down to the next bus stop. His heart won’t stop racing and he says to himself, “Did that really work?”

Trebor hops on the bus and stares out the window. He breathes a sigh of relief and watches a little girl on her pink bike riding away without a care in the world. The bus breezes past a broken down CTA bus and after a while reaches his stop.

Trebor exits the bus and walks along the park to his home. He looks over and sees a cute girl, named Yesenia, that he went to his middle school with, holding birthday balloons. She was considered to be a popular girl and he never seemed to come up with a good enough reason to talk to her.

What should Trebor do?
