Smash the Cake in His Face and Run
I bet you’re a cynical person. You doubt that standing up for yourself or proclaiming your faith will have little impact on Trebor’s situation.
In the moments after the aggressive accusation “You callin’ me a liar?”, Trebor freezes. He doesn’t see a realistic way out of this. With every passing second, another huge dude straightens up or inches closer to Trebor. If he confesses his faith, a huge dude might threaten to have him meet his maker. He isn’t ready to die a martyr.
Fight, flight, or freeze: What should he do? Your advice begins taking root in his mind. He surveys the scene. Huge dude #1 is a foot or two away from him. The other dudes are about five to ten feet behind him. One of the huge dudes in the back waddles closer and Trebor panics.
He discreetly loosens the plastic container, drops the lid, and smashes the cake in huge dude #1’s face. The cake falls to the ground and explodes everywhere. Trebor tries to sprint and slips on a blotch of icing that splatted on the sidewalk. He skins his knee and gets up.
Huge dude #1 is clearly stunned and struggling to clear the cake from his eyes. The other huge dudes are another story. Trebor’s adrenaline kicks in and he’s sprinting down the block toward the next bus stop. He looks over his shoulder and the huge dudes are gaining quickly. He now knows that he won’t be able to outrun them much longer. Ahead of him is a little girl on a small pink bike. This means, there’s a good chance the little girl’s parents are home. A block further, there is a bus parked at the stop.
You counseled him into this mess, you can’t abandon him now. What should he do?
